My internship experi...
Kealey Kostos is a rising senior at DePaul pursuing a major in Finance with a minor in Management. She spent the summer with the People Solutions team in Chicago, Ill. Learn more about Kealey and her summer internship experience in her own words. What initially attracted you to Lockton? When I first came across Lockton's summer internship program, I was immediately drawn to the fact that Lockton is privately held and values entrepreneurship. Unlike many other companies I considered during my internship search, Lockton's independence allows it to prioritize doing what's right for its clients and delivering exceptional service. This focus on freedom and service quality stood out to me. Lockton encourages creative thinking and innovative problem-solving to find the best solutions for their clients. This culture of entrepreneurial spirit and independence was what initially attracted me to Lockton. Favorite thing about Lockton? My favorite aspect of Lockton that I discovered during my internship, is its unique and thriving culture. Lockton fosters a supportive environment filled with hard-working individuals who genuinely care about each other, their work, and their clients. Throughout my summer at Lockton, I've encountered some of the most dedicated, personable, and caring individuals, all of whom contribute to the company's success. The mutual support among the Associates here is unmatched. The people at Lockton are genuinely invested in each other's success, creating a culture that is both motivating and nurturing. What was your favorite part of the summer? The highlight of my summer at Lockton has been the relationships I've built. From fellow interns to my mentor and other Associates, I've formed valuable connections that will go beyond my professional life into my personal life. The various social outings, such as a Cubs game, a visit to the Shedd Aquarium, and volunteering at the Chicago Food Depository, provided opportunities to deepen these relationships. These experiences allowed me to bond with other Associates and mentors on a more personal level, improving my overall internship experience and building lasting connections. What is one takeaway from your time at Lockton that you will carry with you in the future? A significant takeaway from my internship at Lockton is the importance of curiosity and the continuous desire to learn. During my time here, I explored the complexities of the insurance industry and realized that a desire to learn and ask questions is key to success. I learned the value of asking "why" and never taking information at face value. As I return to school and eventually begin my professional career, this mindset will be crucial to my success. Maintaining a curious approach will allow me to excel no matter where I go, ensuring continuous growth and success.

My internship experi...
Ally Harris is a rising senior at Kansas State University majoring in Advertising and Public Relations. She spent the summer with the Lockton Brand and Communications team as a graphic design intern. Learn more about Ally and her internship experience in her own words. What initially attracted you to the Lockton internship program? I was initially attracted to the Lockton internship program because the job posting on LinkedIn was very detailed and allowed me to envision what I would be doing. It was something I could see myself enjoying. I was also attracted to the program because of the size of Lockton. I felt as though at a company this big I would have a large number of opportunities and could grow my network exponentially. How did you hear about the program? I heard about the program through LinkedIn. My major requires us to complete an internship, so I began looking on LinkedIn and saw Lockton show up quite a bit during my job search. What were your expectations or hopes coming into the summer? What were you looking forward to learning? Coming into this internship, I was looking for clarity and reassurance as to what job I would look for post-grad. Being in business, there are so many different avenues you can take and so I was looking for the ability to see how different roles worked and where I could see myself thriving. Favorite thing about Lockton? My favorite thing about Lockton has to be the culture. Associates have this mindset of growing with Lockton, not away from it, and their dedication to the company is something I hope to find for myself someday. As an intern, I have seen firsthand how Associates are equally as dedicated to helping us grow even though we are only contributing two months of our time to the company, which I think requires a very humble, selfless attitude. Whether it’s grabbing coffee to talk about their career journey or taking the time to help us work through projects, the people here are dedicated to fostering an empowering and unified culture in a profession that can sometimes feel as if you either sink or swim. What is one takeaway from your time at Lockton that you will carry with you in the future? The biggest takeaway from my time at Lockton has been my experience in different avenues of the workforce. Throughout my internship, I have had the opportunity to work and meet with people who focus in graphic design, communications, marketing, and even events. It was through these opportunities where I discovered new areas that I am interested in looking at for a job upon graduation. What advice would you give to someone considering an internship at Lockton? I am from Wichita, so spending my summer in KC away from my family was a tough pill to swallow. If my internship wasn’t required for my degree, I’m almost positive I would have talked myself out of it just to stay close to home. However, being an intern at Lockton and moving away from home pushed me out of my comfort zone only to land in a new one. Lockton makes the transition to full-time work in a new environment anything but scary. I felt cared for, supported, and well-informed. Any and every question I may have had was already answered before I could even ask it which was something that made the transition even easier. Kansas City and Lockton are places where I can almost guarantee you will never feel alone. I would encourage anyone who is not from the KC area to take the leap of faith and experience an incredible internship in an even more incredible city.

My internship experi...
Alice Oropeza is a rising senior set to graduate in May 2025 from the University of Missouri - Kansas City with a bachelors in Business Administration with an emphasis in Entrepreneurship and Innovation. She came to Lockton at the recommendation of a peer and spent the summer with the P&C practice in Kansas City, Missouri. Learn more about Alice and her summer internship experience in her own words. --- In my junior year, I was in a headspace that I think many people in their early 20s are in – not knowing what they want to do after their impending graduation date. I had a list of about 20 internship opportunities pulled up on my laptop before class one day, weighing the pros and cons of each, when a friend and peer pointed at the ‘Lockton’ line. All she had to say was, “You should work there.” I did some reading on Lockton’s website and LinkedIn and applied that night. Initially, I had no idea what to expect, no expectations to set – but even if I had set any, Lockton would have blown those expectations out of the water. After a surprisingly fun interview process, I was offered an internship position and joined the summer of ’24 intern class. I joined my unit under the Construction and Design vertical almost immediately. Everyone I worked with was welcoming and willing to help, answer questions, or chat. My mentor, Alison Moriarty, was an amazing teacher. She took time out of her schedule to meet with me regularly, guide me through unknown corporate territory, and introduce me to Associates whom I may not have met otherwise. Without her knowledge and guidance, I don’t think I would have had the same experience I did. Alison set me up for success in the best ways, and I am truly grateful for the time I spent with her at Lockton. In previous jobs and internships, I have never been given as many opportunities or as challenged as I was at Lockton. In my short eight weeks, I have met with clients, presented to my peers and Lockton executives, submitted case study reports, and participated in learning development courses. In addition, I also participated in a group project. For this project, a team of four other interns and myself created and presented to Lockton Associates. We were also asked to present directly to the client this project would impact. It is truly awe-inducing how much opportunity I have been given here. Lockton is truly a company that promotes curiosity and provides an amazing and inclusive culture. The culture at Lockton would have to be what surprised me the most about this internship. Everyone I encountered, from Associates who have been within the industry for upwards of 30 years to Associates who have started their roles within the year, everyone has been so kind and willing to take time out of their days to teach me something, answer my questions, and tell me about their journey to and through Lockton. What I enjoyed the most about Lockton is the opportunity to give back to the community. In July, my unit volunteered at Ronald McDonald House in Kansas City. I learned that several Associates visit schools to read to kids on their lunch breaks and Lockton even offers paid volunteer days a year. We also volunteered at KC Pet Project as an intern group. My Kansas City community has always been important to me, and seeing my employer feel the same way was so fulfilling.  As a lifelong learner, I am so thankful for the learning opportunities and curious culture Lockton produces. I am grateful to have met so many amazing people who have only pushed me to be the best version of myself. On my first day, someone left a note on my desk that said, “Learn something new today.” This note has stayed with me throughout my internship journey. While I don’t know who left me this note, it has served as a reminder that while I had already earned a spot in the internship class, it was in my hands to push myself to try new things and learn as much as I could.

Making an impact: Br...
Bruce White learned of his Community Impact Award recognition while helping at Boy Scout camp, a place that has deeply influenced his life. "I was shocked and humbled," Bruce said. "There’s probably not a charitable event in Kansas City that doesn’t have a Lockton Associate involved. To be the one singled out is kind of overwhelming, given all the incredible things people are doing.” The Community Impact Award, funded by the Lockton family, honors Associates who have gone above and beyond to make their community a better place through volunteering and philanthropy. Bruce was awarded a $25,000 donation to a charity of his choice on behalf of the Lockton family. He chose the Heart of America Council, the Kansas City location for Boy Scouts of America, an organization that has been a significant part of his life. Bruce’s journey with the Boy Scouts began in his youth. He grew up as a Boy Scout and achieved the rank of Eagle Scout, instilling values of hard work and leadership. These principles guided him throughout his 28-year career at Lockton. "My experience with the Heart of America Council has been transformative," Bruce said. "I help with risk management and safety and serve as Vice President of Safe Scouting, focusing on youth protection and safety." The Heart of America Council provides the nation's foremost youth program of character development and ethical leadership training, helping young people be "Prepared. For Life." Boy Scouts of America comprises over 1 million youth members and 628,000 volunteers across the United States. "The money will help us continue our mission," Bruce said. "This summer, we camped 6,000 youth. Seeing them gain experience and confidence is incredibly rewarding.” We also award $150,000 annually in scholarships to our student-staff who work at the summer camp.” Looking ahead, Bruce has ambitious goals. "We want to continue growing the program and helping youth become leaders in the community and quality human beings. The award money will go towards replacing tents lost in a hailstorm and providing scholarships for kids who can't afford to come to camp." Bruce attributes his success to living the “be prepared” lifestyle taught by the Boy Scouts. "Being around adults who had the service and pay-it-forward mentality was influential. I talk to these kids about how many people helped them get to where they are now.” Bruce’s involvement with Lockton and the Boy Scouts has profoundly impacted him both personally and professionally. As the Risk Manager for the Heart of America Council, he experiences firsthand the intersection of his Lockton expertise and his volunteer work. “Lockton allowing us to have this time off to volunteer is truly special,” Bruce notes, highlighting how the company’s support enhances his ability to contribute meaningfully to both organizations. Lockton's culture has been a significant support for Bruce's passions. "Lockton’s culture drives people to want to serve and support the community. You look around and see the energy that goes into serving the community. Our culture drives people to want to do it and gives them the time to do it." Bruce’s dedication to his career and volunteer work exemplifies the spirit of the Community Impact Award. His contributions continue to make a lasting difference, preparing young people for life and leadership.
