Clarissa Franks Life at Lockton

March 28, 2024

My career, my story:...
For Clarissa Franks, Lockton is synonymous with growth and opportunity. An industry veteran of over 15 years, Clarissa joined Lockton in November 2023 to capitalize on opportunity – opportunities for personal and professional growth, client advocacy, and growth. “I came from a broker that was constantly tied up in the numbers and margin,” said Clarissa. “I wanted to be challenged by opportunity and what’s possible, not what we needed to do to keep margins. When I met with Ron [Lockton], he was interested in me – not the numbers. And I knew this opportunity would be different.” And four months in, she can confidently say Lockton is different. “The people are the biggest difference. There’s a difference in the quality of the teams – everyone at every level is consistent,” she said. “It’s not just your superstar Producers – every team member is fantastic.” But what really stood out to Clarissa is the community here at Lockton. “The vibrancy and enthusiasm around our Associate Resource Groups (ARG) really struck me,” she said. “There’s executive support behind them and a lot of time and energy is spent cultivating these groups.” Clarissa specifically mentions the Ignite group – Lockton’s young professional group. Clarissa recently had the opportunity to speak to the group about career paths, adversity in the workplace and finding work-life balance, amongst other topics. “The impact of this group – promotions, mentorships, access to leadership and career experience - is powerful,” she noted. “Things are changing at Lockton and our ARGs will continue to help that.” Something that continues to be at the forefront at Lockton is diversity. Lockton is a proud sponsor of the Tate Museum to promote the importance of DEI, artistic risk-taking, community engagement and access to art for all. An upcoming exhibit, titled Now You See Us and sponsored by Lockton, comes on display later this year. Clarissa, who is speaking at the opening event, sees the parallels. “The exhibition is about celebrating women artists who refused to be boxed in by the stereotypes of their time,” explained Clarissa. “So often in the workplace, women aren’t given proper credit for the work they’re doing. I don’t think that describes Lockton at all. Here, women are seen and acknowledged.” “People can be themselves here. They can bring their whole selves to a space where they can be seen, wear their heart on their sleeves and show their passion. I’m still new, but I feel like I’m at home.”
Lucy Scott Life at Lockton

March 28, 2024

My career, my story:...
Lucy Scott’s story is one of steady growth. After graduating from university, Lucy heard about Lockton through a family friend. She quickly found herself on the Cyber and Technology team. “We felt so small when I joined,” noted Lucy. “Our practice was only five years old at the time and there were just a few of us. I didn’t know much about Lockton, but I knew it was a fast-growing business. And we have grown so much during my time here.” After an exciting decade of learning, development, relationship building and growth, Lucy is now the Head of Cyber and Technology in the U.K., which works to understand and manage the cyber and technology risks of our clients around the world. The practice has grown exponentially over nearly two decades and now has more than 100 specialists globally. “We work together globally but we’re able to be flexible for our regional clients,” said Lucy. “Insurance can seem so complicated but really we’re just creating relationships and solutions for our clients.” In addition to her role, Lucy helps lead Ignite – Lockton’s professional growth community for the U.K. region. The goal of Ignite is to enable the professional growth of Associates while contributing to the financial growth and the future direction of Lockton. “We revived the group during the pandemic when people were really craving engagement,” said Lucy. “It’s turned into so much more since then.” With over 600 members, the group hosts and participates in a variety of activities. From “Day in the Life” initiatives where Associates can shadow Lockton’s leaders, to leadership talks, networking events, charity and community activities and more, the group continues to grow and make an impact every day. “I love the sense of empowerment that we’ve created amongst our community leaders and members. We recently had someone come to me and ask if they could create an Ignite book club as another means to connect socially without alcohol. Associates are really taking the platform that we’ve created to drive forward their ideas and make it their own,” said Lucy. Through it all, the group provides a community where young professionals can learn from each other, embrace and advance Lockton’s culture, and shape the future of Lockton. For Lucy, the growth of Ignite represents her growth at Lockton. “Lockton has changed a lot during my time here,” said Lucy. “You can feel the momentum. We’ve made a lot of investments in our people and our business – and you can see the impact that it’s making on our growth. It’s great to be able to grow alongside the company.”

Making an impact: Ma...
When Matt Pateidl and Tom Metzner were named Community Impact Award winners, they were shocked. “I was not anticipating on being called to the stage as I was sitting in the top back balcony of the hall and it was quite a surprise,” noted Matt. “There are so many Associates that do such great things in all of our communities and to be singled out with Tom is very humbling.” The Community Impact Award, funded by the Lockton family, honors an Associate (or two) in each region around the globe who has gone above and beyond to make their community a better place through volunteering, philanthropy, or a combination of both. Matt and Tom were awarded a $25,000 donation to a charity of their choice on behalf of the Lockton family. “Tom and I met to discuss how we wanted to gift the generous $25,000 and the best way to accomplish that,” said Matt. “We agreed that it must satisfy two components: it must be local, and it must assist a first responder.” Tom has been a volunteer firefighter for over 26 years – something he continues to do in addition to his work at Lockton – and supporting other first responders is a priority. “I suggested we reach out to Tunnels to Towers as I heard about the organization through the media but had no previous contact with them,” said Matt. “I made a call, found my way to a senior director, and told him about what we were trying to accomplish. A few days later, he called me back and told me about a KCMO police officer and his K-9 officer who were both struck and killed in a tragic accident.” The money donated to Tunnels to Towers was given to the fallen officer’s spouse to pay off their home. “First responders put their lives on the line for the community they serve,” said Tom. “This is something they live with every day when they go to work. As soon as I did some research and realized we could keep the funds local, I agreed this was the perfect avenue to support a family that encountered a line of death duty.” Community is a large part of Lockton’s culture, but especially in Kansas City. “I don’t think a charitable walk, run, dinner, event in Kansas City is not touched by some Associate from Lockton,” said Matt. “I’ve served on a couple of association boards, and it’s frequently a challenge to get people to step up and volunteer. That’s not the case at Lockton. There have been times when we’ve had to cap the number of registrations due to the project not being able to accommodate all the volunteers,” added Tom. Matt and Tom continue to bring Lockton’s caring culture to life. From organizing large-scale events to helping local organizations with hands-on help, the two have dedicated countless hours and infinite energy to bettering the community. “We’re not one to shy away from a project; nothing is too small or big for us to consider,” added Tom. There have been a couple of projects where Matt and I looked at each other and questioned what we were thinking when we said yes, but in the end, everything worked out. We deliver on our promises. Whether it’s client obligations or looking somebody in the eyes and saying ‘Lockton’s got it,’ we do what we say. Lockton has a really good reputation in the insurance world, but also in the communities we live. It’s a personal honor to carry on this legacy and work with so many incredibly talented professionals.”
Niall Martin Life at Lockton Header

Making an impact: Ni...
Niall Martin, Head of People Solutions, New Zealand, has experienced first-hand the impact of Cystic Fibrosis. When he and his family saw the care, passion, and commitment of Cystic Fibrosis New Zealand, he knew that he needed to support this impactful organization. Niall has been fundraising for the charity for close to a decade. Through recent participation in the Auckland marathon and related events, he and the New Zealand team have raised thousands to support families impacted by Cystic Fibrosis, contribute to research on the disease, and advocate on behalf of the community. In recognition of his commitment to improving the lives of those around him, he was awarded the Lockton Community Impact Award in 2023. The Community Impact Award, funded by the Lockton family, honors an Associate in each region around the globe who has gone above and beyond to make their community a better place through volunteering, philanthropy, or a combination of both. “To me, this award demonstrates Lockton’s commitment across the globe to make real and meaningful differences on the ground where we live and work – in our communities,” Niall said. NZD40,000 was donated to Cystic Fibrosis New Zealand on behalf of Niall for being named the recipient of the Community Impact Award. “This award will make a huge difference and enable the charity to implement some initiatives that otherwise would not have happened this year,” he said. Community is a key pillar at Lockton, showcased through the support of our local communities and the causes that our Associates are passionate about. Every Lockton Associate can do something meaningful and special, with the full support of not just colleagues but of the entire Lockton organization. While Niall was the recipient of the award, he notes that this could not have been possible without the support of his fellow Associates in the New Zealand office. “The award was made in my name, but there’s no ‘I’ in ‘team,’ he said. “Really it represents a huge thank you and recognition for all our Lockton New Zealand team who jump onboard and give their all with our fundraising efforts for Cystic Fibrosis each and every year. Our culture means that if one of us is passionate about something, or simply needs some help, then we know our team members will be there for us – no question.”
